Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill has expressed his intent to sign four or five more players to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season. Following a convincing 3-0 friendly victory against Evesham United on Saturday, Cotterill praised the six summer recruits brought in so far.
The match saw standout performances from new signing Charlie McCann, who scored twice on his debut, and Sopuruchukwu Obieri, who added a third goal. The latest addition to the Robins is goalkeeper Wyll Stanway, who joined from Barrow for a modest five-figure fee, which Cotterill described as “nominal.” The previous day, the club secured Shaun McWilliams, a seasoned midfielder formerly of Rotherham United and Northampton Town.
Along with McCann, Jordan Shipley, Pierce Sweeney, and Joe Tomlinson, these new players bolster the squad at Whaddon Road. Cotterill reflected positively on the recruiting progress, noting the team is better prepared than at the same point last year.

“I think we’ve done really well with the six signings so far,” Cotterill said. “Compared to where we were when I took over—and that’s not to diminish last season’s squad—we have improved our readiness for the season ahead. The players are the right ages, and our trip to Spain helped build camaraderie within the group. It was tough work, but we also enjoyed some good moments.”
Looking ahead, Cotterill aims to secure two loan players soon, with active negotiations expected within the coming week. His recruitment focus includes finding a striker, two wingers, an additional midfielder, and a defensive reinforcement.
“The budget has increased slightly, but it’s still limited, so we have to be strategic in how we allocate funds,” Cotterill explained. “I’ve demonstrated to Clive Gowing, who manages finances alongside Mike Garlick, that I’m capable of handling deals. I know my budget clearly, as I always have at every club, and I’m satisfied with our current position.”
Meanwhile, defender and last season’s team captain James Wilson missed the Evesham game due to a calf injury. Cheltenham Town’s next pre-season friendly will be away at Slimbridge next Saturday, kicking off at 2pm.
