Snowshill Manor and Garden invite visitors to journey through time with the National Trust’s latest exhibition, Threads of Identity, showcasing the extraordinary costume collection of Charles Wade.
Now open to the public, this exhibit features a carefully selected range of garments and accessories from the Snowshill Costume Collection—an eclectic assortment Wade amassed throughout his life. Each piece offers a window into different eras and cultures, illustrating how clothing has long served as a powerful symbol of identity, social status, and global connections.
Among the highlights are an elegantly crafted sack-back dress from the 18th century and a richly patterned English silk brocade gown from the early 1700s. The exhibition also showcases uniforms of significant historical importance, including the distinctive attire worn by the coachmen of the Mayor of London and the ceremonial clothing of the Yeoman of the Guard.

Nick Taylor, project manager for the exhibition, points out a must-see feature: the newly arranged Costume Room. This space delves into Charles Wade’s use of historic dress and objects from his vast collection and features recreations of portrait photographs of celebrated actors.
Many of the garments on display will also be featured in the upcoming National Trust publication, 100 Things to Wear, set for release in September. This book celebrates some of the finest examples of fashion from properties across the Trust.
Admission to Threads of Identity is included with standard entry to Snowshill Manor and Garden, and is free for National Trust members.
