Snow and Ice Warning Hits Gloucestershire: Travel Disruptions Expected on January 2

While Christmas remained largely snow-free, Gloucestershire is bracing for a wintry start to 2026. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice, signaling several hours of snowfall across the region on Friday, January 2.

The warning covers a broad area from Dursley in the south to Cricklade in the north, with the possibility of icy patches developing quickly as sleet and snow clear. The Met Office predicts sleet and snow moving southeast across parts of England and Wales, lasting around two to three hours in any single location.

Snowfall accumulation could reach 1 to 2 cm in many areas, with some spots—especially higher grounds—possibly experiencing up to 5 cm. Icy conditions pose hazards for roads, pavements, and cycle paths, increasing the risk of slips and falls.

Snow is expected to begin falling around 4:30 a.m., arriving from across the Welsh border. By 5 a.m., heavier flurries are forecast over the Cotswolds and Herefordshire, moving southward during the morning and clearing the region by approximately 7:30 a.m. Light snow showers may persist through midday, but no further accumulation is expected after noon.

Travelers should anticipate delays on roads and public transport, including bus and train services, as journeys may take longer due to hazardous conditions.

In the days leading up to the snowfall, the region will experience frosty and foggy mornings, with sun breaking through later in the day. New Year’s Day will be cloudy with isolated rain showers and a chilly breeze. Into the weekend, sunnier spells are expected, especially in eastern areas, but the west will continue to face wintry showers, accompanied by cold temperatures, severe frosts, and icy nights.

Residents are advised to take extra care during these conditions, plan travel accordingly, and stay updated with the latest weather forecasts.
