Simple Changes to Reduce Dementia Risk, Says NHS Doctor

According to an NHS doctor, there are lifestyle and health factors that could potentially prevent dementia to some extent. These factors, when corrected and addressed, may have an impact on dementia risk. Dr. Karan Rajan highlighted 14 risk factors that, if managed, could theoretically help prevent almost half of dementia cases, according to a 2024 Lancet commission.

One of the ‘sneaky’ risk factors mentioned by the doctor is high LDL cholesterol, which can contribute to arterial plaque buildup, increasing the risk of heart conditions. Other factors such as high blood pressure, sensory decline, including hearing and vision loss, and diabetes were also identified as potential contributors to dementia risk.

The NHS emphasizes the importance of consulting a GP at the first sign of memory problems or other symptoms, as dementia is not an inevitable part of aging. Seeking help early and addressing these risk factors may help individuals reduce their risk of developing dementia.
