In response to Donald Trump’s recent announcement of new tariffs targeting the UK and several other countries, Sir Keir Starmer held an emergency press conference yesterday to address the escalating situation.
Since Trump’s return to the White House, the Prime Minister has aimed to maintain steady and constructive relations. However, that balance was disrupted when President Trump announced an initial 10% tariff—later raised to 25%—on countries opposing his bid to take control of Greenland, including the UK.
Sir Keir condemned the tariffs as “completely wrong” during his Monday briefing at Downing Street. He stressed that although the UK and US hold differing views regarding Greenland, these disputes should be resolved through diplomatic dialogue rather than punitive trade measures.

Emphasising the enduring importance of the UK-US alliance, Starmer highlighted the security partnership that remains vital to the safety of citizens across the UK. He rejected claims that he had been too accommodating to Trump, asserting that his government’s approach has secured hundreds of billions of pounds in investment, safeguarding jobs and businesses across Britain.
Starmer further underscored the deep collaboration between the UK and US on defence, security, and intelligence—a partnership he described as unparalleled globally and essential for public safety.
While the European Union considers retaliatory tariffs on American goods valued over €90 billion, the Prime Minister has distanced the UK from such measures. When asked if Britain would follow the EU’s lead, Starmer warned that a tariff war would harm businesses, workers, and families, adding that his priority is to engage constructively with European allies and the US to avoid further escalation.
The debate now centers on whether Sir Keir should adopt a tougher stance with President Trump amidst these trade tensions. The Prime Minister’s measured approach aims to protect vital economic and security ties, but critics question if a more assertive response is needed in the face of aggressive US policies.
