Shin-Kicking Champion ‘Shindiana Jones’ Honoured in Parliament as He Retires from Cotswold Olimpick Games

Mike Newby, 34, from Cheltenham and widely known as “Shindiana Jones,” has officially retired from shin-kicking after an unprecedented three consecutive world titles at the Cotswold Olimpick Games. Honoured with a parliamentary Early Day Motion, Mike’s unique blend of grit and unyielding training earned him a place in the sport’s storied history and the hearts of fans nationwide.

A PR associate director by profession, Mike’s road to victory combined innovative preparation techniques with a warrior’s spirit. His rigorous daily training involved striking his shins with a hammer and rolling them with a rolling pin — conditioning his legs to deliver and endure punishing blows. The “shin wheel,” his signature move consisting of a shin strike followed by tripping the opponent, became legendary in the tournament.

The Cotswold Olimpick Games, a traditional English folk sports event held annually in Chipping Campden, feature this unique contest where participants kick each other’s shins until one yields. With rules against high kicks and protective boots, the competition demands both skill and toughness. Yet, Mike faced challenges as some competitors violated the safety regulations by wearing walking boots, providing unfair advantages. Despite this, his performance remained dominant.

Mike’s third and final victory on May 30, 2025, was marked by fierce competition, including a grueling 10-minute final round. Though he sustained bruises and minor injuries, he finished the tournament undefeated, proudly securing his hat-trick. Cheltenham MP Max Wilkinson recognised his achievement with a motion in the House of Commons, celebrating not only Mike’s dedication but also the preservation of British heritage through the Games.

Facing the mental toll of the sport and with much to lose in his personal life, including his fiancée Geo Legate, Mike chose to retire at his peak. However, he plans to remain involved as the competition’s official referee, known as the “stickler,” for next year. His advice to future participants is clear: respect the sport, train hard, but remember it’s meant to be a fun, family-friendly event.

Mike’s legacy as “Shindiana Jones,” a shin-kicking legend, remains intact—an undefeatable force who brought renewed attention to this historic English pastime.
