A resilient German Shepherd puppy named Reef has captured hearts at Cotswold Dogs and Cats Home (CDCH), where he arrived with a severely deformed front leg and a large umbilical hernia. Unlike his siblings from the same unexpected litter, who have found new homes, Reef remains at the shelter, fighting for a chance at a better life.
Reef’s journey began when an overwhelmed family surrendered the litter to CDCH. From the moment he arrived, shelter staff noticed his struggle—he awkwardly dragged himself using his other limbs, unable to walk properly due to constant pain. It was clear Reef needed more than a loving home; he needed expert medical care.
Veterinary examinations revealed that Reef’s damaged front leg was non-functional and causing him ongoing discomfort. Additionally, his sizable hernia required urgent surgical repair. The veterinary team made the difficult decision: Reef’s best path to relief and mobility would be through amputation of his painful limb combined with hernia surgery.

“Reef’s condition is severe, but we are committed to giving him the best chance,” explains CDCH vet Morwenna Fry. “After surgery, we’ll support his recovery with physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to strengthen his remaining front leg and help him adapt.”
Now safely settled in a loving foster home, Reef’s gentle spirit shines through his challenges. Though his rehabilitation will be demanding, his determination and kindness have already won over the hearts of staff and volunteers. Small milestones in his progress and courage hint at a hopeful future.
CDCH spokesperson adds, “Reef’s upcoming surgery and recovery will require significant resources, a challenge for our small charity. Every stage—from surgery to ongoing therapy—comes with considerable costs. We rely on the generosity of supporters to help make this possible.”
Despite the uncertain road ahead, CDCH is unwavering in their dedication to ensuring Reef lives a full, happy life—one filled with dignity, freedom, and love. They invite compassionate animal lovers to join them in giving Reef the opportunity to thrive.
