A German Shepherd puppy named Reef, born with a severely deformed front leg and a large umbilical hernia, arrived at the Cotswold Dogs and Cats Home (CDCH) as part of an unexpected litter. While his siblings have already found forever homes, Reef remains waiting for a chance at a happy life.
The pup came from a home overwhelmed with too many animals, and his condition immediately caught the attention of the shelter team. Reef’s painful, non-functional front leg makes walking nearly impossible, and his large hernia requires urgent surgery. When he first arrived, the team watched him drag his tiny body across the floor, but giving up on this resilient little fighter was never an option.
CDCH’s veterinary team determined that Reef urgently needs surgery to amputate his damaged limb and repair the hernia in a single operation. Following surgery, Reef faces months of hydrotherapy and physiotherapy to build strength and adapt to life on three legs, especially since his remaining front leg is also weaker than average.

Veterinarian Morwenna Fry explained, “Reef’s right forelimb is severely deformed and non-functional. We’ll be operating on his leg and repairing his hernia at the same time. Afterward, our team will dedicate ourselves fully to his healing and rehabilitation.”
Now safe in a loving foster home, Reef is displaying remarkable courage and determination. Despite his challenges, his gentle spirit and kind eyes have already won the hearts of everyone who meets him.
A spokesperson from CDCH said, “Though Reef’s road ahead will be difficult, we’re committed to giving him the best possible chance at a comfortable, active life. Treatment will include surgery, physiotherapy, and eventually hydrotherapy to strengthen his remaining limbs.”
Reef’s first physiotherapy session and diagnostic X-rays have already taken place, marking the beginning of his journey to recovery. However, the cost of his treatment places significant pressure on the small charity.
The shelter is calling on supporters to help cover the expenses involved in Reef’s surgery, post-operative care, and ongoing rehabilitation. They are dedicated to ensuring he has a dignified, free, and joyful life, regardless of the unknowns that lie ahead.
With your help, Reef can thrive and experience the love and care every dog deserves.
