SGS Pride Set to Rebound After Narrow Defeat in National American Football Final

The South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS) Pride American Football team is gearing up to bounce back after a tough loss in the British Universities and College Sport National Vase Cup final. Held at Loughborough University, SGS Pride fell 20-6 to the Brunel Burners in a hard-fought match.

Head Coach Ben Herod, based at SGS’s Stoke Gifford campus, acknowledged the challenge posed by Brunel’s roster, which featured several American players. “We were clear underdogs going in, but our defence really showed up and surprised many,” he said. “This game taught us a crucial lesson: against teams with more experienced American players, we need absolute focus and precision. While we didn’t reach that standard this time, the experience is invaluable.”

Despite the defeat, Herod is optimistic, noting that most of the team will return next season stronger and more experienced. “We’re going to be in a great place next year, and I hope to see us back in the final.”

The match began quickly in Brunel’s favor after a turnover gave them possession early on. David Moore III capitalized with a touchdown, though the Burners missed the extra point narrowly. SGS Pride responded with strong defensive plays, including a key tackle by JJ Aboagye that kept them competitive.

Brunel maintained pressure into the second quarter, scoring again through Joao Camara, though SGS Pride’s defence denied the extra points once more. After a quieter half, Brunel introduced quarterback Cole McFarlane in the second half. McFarlane made a significant impact, rushing into the endzone for a touchdown and securing the conversion to finally add points on the board.

SGS Pride fought back as Adam Deverill powered through the defense to score their only touchdown. With just minutes left, the game tightened, but despite some lucky breaks, Brunel controlled possession and sealed the victory.

MVP honors went to Cole McFarlane, whose touchdown and conversion accounted for the majority of Brunel’s points. Herod reflected on the team’s performance: “We gave their offence too much opportunity early on through turnovers. Our offence improved in the second half, but mistakes and lower football IQ cost us dearly. We had the effort and hustle but lacked the mental accuracy needed to win.”

With the foundation set, SGS Pride looks forward to building on this experience and coming back stronger in the next season.
