The South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS) Pride American Football team kept their championship dreams alive after a gripping 34-31 overtime win against the Northumbria Mustangs. This pulsating contest, held at Pride’s home ground in Stoke Gifford, sets SGS up for a semi-final clash against the Portsmouth Destroyers at Langstone Sports Village this Sunday.
The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams exchanging touchdowns and field goals in a display of skill and determination. Pride’s defense was tested like never before, allowing more than two scores for only the handful of times in nearly two decades, according to head coach Ben Herod.
Ashon McKale ignited the Pride’s charge with a sublime touchdown, weaving through Northumbria’s defense to put his team ahead. Teammate Ellis Phillips followed suit, turning over possession and sprinting into the end zone for another crucial score. Northumbria responded fiercely, with key plays from wide receiver Julian Abrams and a remarkable fumble recovery touchdown by defensive lineman Isiah Shebioba.

As the second half intensified, McKale powered through again for a short-range rushing touchdown, while Northumbria’s kicker Harry Bowers consistently converted field goals to keep their side in contention. Quarterback Jake Day was instrumental for the Mustangs, executing a two-point conversion and delivering precise passes for touchdowns.
Not to be outdone, Owanye Montaque’s incredible 65-yard rushing touchdown tied the game at the end of the second half, pushing it into an electrifying overtime.
In the extra period, the Mustangs struck first with a field goal, nudging ahead. But SGS Pride rallied brilliantly in response. The hero of the day was Adam Deverill, who sealed the victory with a breathtaking touchdown run—his final home game score—propelling SGS Pride into the semi-finals.
Coach Herod praised the extraordinary intensity of the encounter: “That has to go down as one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of. Our defense faced its toughest challenge this season, but our offense stepped up when it mattered most. Credit to Northumbria; very few teams have managed to put up such a fight against us over the years.”
He also highlighted Deverill’s inspiring journey, noting, “Adam started playing football with us in sixth form and will soon graduate with his degree. Scoring the game-winning touchdown in his last home game was truly special—we hope he finishes his time here on a sporting high.”
With spirits high and momentum gained, SGS Pride looks forward to their upcoming semi-final clash with renewed confidence and determination to claim the BUCS Premier League title.
