The SGS Pride American Football team experienced their first defeat of the season, yet they remain proud of their performance. Running back Owayne Montaque scored the sole touchdown for the South Gloucestershire and Stroud College-based squad in their home clash against the Brunel Burners.
This matchup, featuring the 2024 British Universities and College Sports champions against the Southern conference leaders, was seen as a preview for a potential play-off encounter later in the season. Given the strength of the opposition, the challenge was always going to be significant, and the visitors emerged victorious with a 20-6 win under the Stoke Gifford sunshine.
The game began solemnly, with two minutes of silence in respect of Remembrance Day. From the kickoff, both teams displayed intense defensive efforts and fierce competition for possession. The score remained deadlocked until just before halftime when Brunel quarterback Christian Dzulynsky broke through with a touchdown, followed by a precise field goal from wide receiver Travis Carpenter.

Carpenter continued to demonstrate his skill after the break, adding another field goal. SGS Pride fought back as Montaque got their only touchdown on the board, but despite a spirited push to close the gap, Brunel sealed the victory with a late touchdown from running back David Moore.
SGS College director of American Football and Pride head coach Ben Herod emphasized the positives despite the loss. “Facing a team as strong as Brunel was a tough step early in the season. Our defense worked incredibly hard, keeping us competitive. Though we took risks late in the game, their recovery of a kick extended their lead. That said, this experience sets the stage perfectly for our final game and anticipates a thrilling conference-deciding match with Brunel,” Herod said.
Brunel’s win marked their fourth consecutive victory, maintaining their undefeated run. Meanwhile, SGS Pride, having started the season with two wins, will look to bounce back. The Pride will aim to return to winning ways when they host the Portsmouth Destroyers at SGS College on Sunday, November 30.
