The South Gloucestershire and Stroud College Pride American Football team made a powerful statement as they rebounded emphatically from their first defeat of the season. Led by running backs Owayne Montaque and Ayo Olushoga, who both crossed the goal line twice, the Pride overwhelmed the Portsmouth Destroyers with a commanding 42-0 victory.
This dominant performance was the perfect response following a disappointing loss to the league leaders, Brunel Burners, who had ended Pride’s previous unbeaten run. Head coach Ben Herod remained confident after that setback, and the team delivered exactly what was expected by completely controlling the game this time around.
From the outset, the Pride took charge, with Ash Bailey orchestrating the offense and setting up Americo Da Silva’s opening touchdown, signaling the tone for a one-sided contest. Kicker Ryan Woodhouse was flawless throughout the game, converting every extra point attempt with precision.

Tom Pande-Jackson thrilled the fans with a clever end-around play that culminated in a touchdown, showcasing the strategic creativity of the team. Olushoga then electrified the crowd with back-to-back touchdowns: one from close range and another a spectacular long run down the sideline, highlighting the team’s versatility beyond their strong defensive reputation.
Montaque, who had also been the lone scorer in the previous game against Brunel, continued his impressive form by hurdling over defenders and powering through for two touchdowns, including a long run to cap off the game.
Coach Herod praised his squad’s resilience and offensive execution, saying, “I thought the team bounced back perfectly from the Brunel loss. We carried forward the effort and execution on offense which gave us the edge we needed.”
Looking ahead, the Pride face a crucial match against the Exeter Demons this Sunday. Herod expects a tough challenge but is confident that his team will rise to the occasion as they aim to finish the year strongly before the Christmas break.
“The Exeter game finishes off this half of the season,” Herod said. “They ran Brunel close earlier this year, so we are braced for another tough contest here on campus.”
