Severn Trent urges water conservation but maintains no hosepipe ban

Severn Trent, the water supplier responsible for Gloucester and Cheltenham, has confirmed that it has not imposed any hosepipe bans despite ongoing drought conditions after several weeks of hot and dry weather. The region has experienced its fifth heatwave this summer, which has led to drought declarations across the country and hosepipe restrictions from several water providers, particularly in the South West.

Among these, South West Water, Wessex Water, and Thames Water have introduced bans, whereas Bristol Water, supplying parts of South Gloucestershire, has yet to implement any restrictions.

While rivers and reservoirs in Gloucestershire are currently lower than desired for this time of year, Severn Trent relies on a diverse mix of water sources beyond reservoirs. The company is actively managing resources to supply water where needed, treating additional volumes and repairing leaks at an increased rate.

A spokesperson for Severn Trent explained: “We have experienced record water demand this summer, with five heatwaves and rainfall at less than five per cent of the average across our region. This has understandably led to the official drought status declaration.

“Although we currently have no restrictions in place and have benefitted from occasional localized rain, we are still recovering from prolonged hot and dry spells.

“Our teams continue to work tirelessly to treat more water, redistribute supplies across the region, and address leaks promptly.

“We are encouraging all customers to use water wisely to help us avoid any potential restrictions as the hot and dry conditions persist.”

Severn Trent urges customers to conserve water where possible to support sustainable supply throughout the ongoing dry period.
