Drivers travelling through the Cotswolds will face a lengthy diversion as a key stretch of the B4014 road closes for resurfacing. The closure affects a two-mile section running through the village of Tetbury Upton and an additional 1.5-mile adjacent stretch near the Chavenage Green turning.
The closures are scheduled to take place over seven nights from 7pm to 7am, beginning Monday 27 July and continuing until Tuesday 4 August. There will be no closures during the weekend to avoid disruption.
Motorists journeying from Tetbury Upton to Avening during the closure hours will be unable to use the B4014 directly. Instead, Gloucestershire County Council’s Highways team has established an almost 11-mile diversion route. This detour guides drivers south along the B4014 to Tetbury, then west for 3.5 miles via the A4135 to the A46 junction. From there, the route heads north for three miles along the A46 to Nailsworth before turning along the B4014 Avening Road to reconnect with the B4014 beyond the closure.

Access into and out of the closed section of road will not be permitted during the closure times under the Temporary Traffic Order. Pedestrian access will be maintained where a designated footway is available. Emergency vehicle passage will remain unaffected by the restrictions.
A letter issued to residents explains: “We will be resurfacing the road at the above location. To ensure the safety of you and our workforce, we have, under Sections 14, 15 & 16 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, made a Temporary Traffic Order to close the road.
“Due to the nature of the engineering works involved in carriageway resurfacing, the closure area extends beyond the precise resurfacing location to allow for the movement and placement of machinery and materials.
“We appreciate that road closures are inconvenient, but to keep everyone safe including our team, this action is necessary. We have planned the work to be completed as swiftly as possible and have chosen timings to minimise disruption.”
