A comprehensive security review has been initiated across the UK defence estate following a breach at RAF Brize Norton by pro-Palestinian activists who defaced two military aircraft with red paint. Video footage released by Palestine Action on Friday reveals two individuals inside the Oxfordshire base, with one riding an electric scooter close to an Airbus Voyager air-to-air refuelling tanker and apparently spraying paint into its engine.
Defence Secretary John Healey expressed his deep concern over the vandalism, stating, “I am really disturbed that this happened and have ordered an investigation and a review of wider security at our bases.” He emphasized the critical role these aircraft play in supporting global security and peace, adding, “This action does nothing to support Gaza or our push for peace and stability in the Middle East.”
Downing Street confirmed that security protocols are being reviewed nationwide within the defence estate, with close collaboration ongoing between the government and police authorities. A No 10 spokesperson underscored the seriousness of the breach, affirming, “We treat all breaches of security very seriously, and where there is suspected criminal activity, we will take the necessary steps to investigate and prosecute in accordance with longstanding principles.”

Importantly, officials confirmed the incident did not interrupt any scheduled aircraft operations.
In response, a spokesperson for Palestine Action criticized the UK Government’s stance, stating, “Despite publicly condemning the Israeli Government, Britain continues to send military cargo, fly spy planes over Gaza and refuel US/Israeli fighter jets. Britain isn’t just complicit, it’s an active participant in the Gaza genocide and war crimes across the Middle East.” They asserted that by decommissioning two military planes, their actions directly intervened to prevent crimes against Palestinians.
RAF Brize Norton is a vital hub for UK strategic air transport and refuelling missions, including flights to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. A Ministry of Defence representative condemned the vandalism and praised the Armed Forces: “Our Armed Forces represent the very best of Britain. They put their lives on the line for us, and their duty, dedication, and selfless sacrifice are an inspiration to us all. It is our responsibility to support those who defend us.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer took to X to declare, “The act of vandalism committed at RAF Brize Norton is disgraceful. Our Armed Forces represent the very best of Britain and put their lives on the line for us every day. It is our responsibility to support those who defend us.”
Thames Valley Police confirmed an ongoing investigation: “We have received a report of people gaining access to RAF Brize Norton and causing criminal damage. We are working with the Ministry of Defence Police and partners at the base. Inquiries continue to identify and apprehend those responsible.”
