Save £12.50 When Applying for Your Passport Online

If you need a new passport, applying online through the official Government website is the most cost-effective option, saving you £12.50 compared to sending your application by post.

A valid passport is essential for international travel and often serves as an official form of identification, much like a UK driving licence. Regardless of whether you’re applying for your first passport or renewing an existing one, there is an application fee involved. Recent updates to UK passport fees came into effect on April 10, increasing the cost for both online and postal applications.

For adults applying within the UK, the online fee is now £94.50, up from £88.50. Children’s passports cost £61.50, increased from £57.50. Choosing to apply by post adds an extra £12.50 to these fees, making postal applications £107 for adults and £74 for children.

To apply online, visit gov.uk/apply-renew-passport. You will need a digital photograph, a valid payment method such as a credit or debit card, and your old passport if you are renewing. Proof of identity and citizenship must also be provided.

For those who need assistance, many local Post Office branches offer support with the online application process. Be aware that this convenience may come with an additional service fee.

If you prefer or need to apply by post, you can obtain a paper application form from your nearest Post Office. Postal applications typically take longer to process than online submissions. You must send in a fully completed form, supporting documents, two photographs, and the application fee. Post Office staff can help check your form, but you must supply your own photos. This help may also incur extra charges. Payments at Post Offices can be made by cash or card.

Standard processing time for a new passport is usually around three weeks from receipt. Processing may take longer if additional information is required. If your travel plans are urgent, there are expedited application options available through passport office appointments, which require additional fees.

If your passport has been lost or stolen, it must be cancelled before applying for a replacement. Damaged passports must also be replaced, as they may not be valid for travel.

Before travelling abroad, verify the entry requirements for your destination. For instance, passports for EU countries should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date and have been issued within the last ten years.
