Save £12.50 by Applying for Your Passport Online

If you need a new passport, opting to apply online through the official Government website can save you £12.50 compared to submitting a paper application by post.

A valid passport is essential for international travel and serves as a key form of identification alongside your UK driving licence. Whether you’re applying for your first passport or renewing an existing one, it’s important to know the costs involved.

Since April 10 this year, the fees for UK passport applications have changed. Applying online costs £94.50 for adults and £61.50 for children. Choosing to apply by post adds an extra £12.50, bringing the prices to £107 for adults and £74 for children.

According to GOV.UK, “It’s £12.50 cheaper to apply for a passport online than by post.”

To apply online, visit gov.uk/apply-renew-passport. You’ll need a digital photograph, a valid debit or credit card for payment, and your current passport if you’re renewing. You must also provide proof of identity and citizenship.

If you prefer assistance with your online application, many local Post Office branches offer help—though this service carries an additional fee.

For postal applications, you can collect a paper form from your nearby Post Office. Submit the completed form with two passport-sized photos, supporting documents, and the appropriate fee. Note that postal applications often take longer to process than online submissions, and Post Office staff can help check your form for accuracy but you are responsible for providing your own photographs.

Payments for postal applications may be made by cash, debit, or credit card.

Typically, you can expect to receive your new passport within three weeks. Processing may take longer if further information is required. If you need a passport urgently, GOV.UK offers two expedited services requiring an appointment at a passport office.

If your passport has been lost or stolen, you must cancel it before applying for a replacement. Damaged passports must also be replaced, as damaged passports may not be accepted for travel.

Before you travel, always check the entry requirements of your destination. For example, many EU countries require your passport to be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date and issued within the last 10 years.
