Sam Thompson recently shared a lighthearted story about his visit to Buckingham Palace, where he accidentally broke several royal protocols during the King’s Trust Awards ceremony last month.
Among a star-studded guest list that featured George and Amal Clooney, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kate Garraway, and Declan Donnelly, Sam found himself at the heart of a memorable moment — albeit for all the wrong reasons. On the Staying Relevant podcast with Pete Wicks, he revealed how his nerves led to multiple gaffes while meeting King Charles.
Sam admitted that shortly after meeting the King, he mistakenly addressed him as “mate,” which immediately drew a sharp reaction from one of the King’s aides. Realizing his faux pas, he quickly tried to correct himself by switching to “sir,” only to later discover that this too was inappropriate in the royal context.

He recounted the awkward encounter: “The King was cool, but his aide behind him was like, ‘oh f**k.’ I saw the aide’s face, panicked, swore, and then said ‘sir.'”
In total, Sam confessed to making four major gaffes during the visit. His comedic missteps continued when the King asked about his current endeavors. Initially confused by the question, Sam asked, “What am I doing in life?” The King then clarified he was referring to Sam’s involvement with the King’s Trust, to which Sam responded appreciatively, “I’m just very honoured to be giving Taylor his award.”
Outside of his royal engagements, Sam Thompson’s personal life is attracting attention following recent sightings with his former partner, Sammie Elishi, at a London launch event. Their joint appearance has sparked speculation about a possible reconciliation, especially after they were seen sharing a kiss during Olivia Attwood’s birthday celebrations in April.
