Rugby: Highlights from Championship to Grassroots Leagues

Doncaster Knights ended a run of two defeats by defeating Hartpury 35-22 at Castle Park on Friday night. The Knights started strong, with Connor Edwards scoring within the first minute, followed by a successful conversion from Russell Bennett. However, Hartpury responded impressively, scoring 17 straight points through Harry Bazalgette’s boot and tries by Tom Worts and Harry Short.

Doncaster regained the lead just before halftime when Ben Chapman scored a converted try, aided by a penalty try awarded four minutes earlier. Leading 21-17 at the break, they extended their advantage with Aiden Cross scoring a team try before Robbie Smith replied late for Hartpury. Cross’s second try secured the final victory for Doncaster.

In Regional 1 Midlands, Newent maintained a perfect home record, defeating Lichfield 24-14 and collecting a bonus point. Kyle Towers, James Marshall, and Fin Mellis scored tries with all conversions by Doug Long. Adrian Connelly added a bonus point try as Newent continued their two-season unbeaten streak at the Rec.

Drybrook narrowly lost 18-17 to Banbury, while Lydney dominated Sidmouth 47-7 in Regional 1 South West. Brad Dunn and Tom Broady led the score sheet with multiple tries and conversions. Matson forfeited their match against second-placed Topsham.

In Regional 2 Midlands West, Stow-on-the-Wold remained second despite a 24-19 defeat at Hereford, with Jake Collett scoring twice. Old Centralians suffered a heavy 79-24 loss at Keynsham. Cleve and Royal Wootton Bassett II recorded big wins over Longlevens and Cheltenham, respectively.

Counties 1 Western North saw Gordon League score seven tries beating local rivals Chosen Hill Former Pupils 41-17. Jake McMahon and Pierre Delafontenelle were among the contributors, with Craig Holder adding two conversions.

A top Counties 2 Gloucestershire fixture saw Cinderford United overpower Frampton Cotterell 32-12. The match was paused and relocated after a severe injury, but Cinderford’s late dominance featured a hat-trick from James Kear and strong support from teammates including Harry Tovey’s kicks.

St Mary’s Old Boys climbed to second place with a narrow 31-24 win over Dursley. Smiths Rugby stood fourth following a 57-31 victory at Tewkesbury. Other notable results included Old Elizabethans defeating Stroud, Bream edging Old Patesians, and Cheltenham North recording eight tries in their win against Old Richians.

In Counties 2 Dorset & Wilts North, Fairford was beaten 50-10 at Combe Down. Hucclecote took the lead in Counties 3 Gloucestershire North after a 43-19 win over Cirencester, powered by multiple tries from Lewis Cameron and Harry Leftwich.

Bredon Star and Cheltenham Saracens each secured 84-12 wins in Counties 3, with standout performances from Tolly Wilson and Seb Capaldi, respectively. Gloucester Old Boys triumphed 68-12 at Old Cryptians, while Berry Hill overwhelmed Brockworth 62-19.

In a tight Counties 3 Gloucestershire contest, Coney Hill edged Spartans 31-26. Key tries and Will Pinnell’s conversions made the difference in a closely fought match.
