Roundabout Closure Near Gloucester Imposes 17-Mile Diversion for Resurfacing Works

Gloucestershire County Council has announced a seven-night closure of the Crosshands Roundabout in Brockworth to carry out vital road resurfacing. The closure will take place overnight from 8pm to 7am, starting Wednesday, June 3, and continuing through to Thursday, June 11—excluding the weekend.

The Crosshands Roundabout is a key junction connecting Brockworth and Little Witcombe east-west, and Coopers Hill to the A417 near Primrose Vale Farm Shop north-south. Although only a small portion of the roundabout’s connecting roads will be physically closed, the council has implemented a significantly extended diversion route totaling approximately 17 miles.

Motorists will be rerouted west along the A417 towards Barnwood, then directed south for more than seven miles to Pitchcombe, before looping back northward via the A46 through Painswick, finally returning to Coopers Hill. While shorter alternative routes may exist, the council’s approved diversion prioritizes roads suitable for all vehicle classes to ensure safety and accessibility.

In a statement to residents, Gloucestershire’s Highways team explained: “Resurfacing requires comprehensive road closures extending beyond the immediate work area to accommodate machinery and materials safely. Though we understand closures cause inconvenience, these measures are necessary to protect both the public and our workforce.”

The council has scheduled the work to proceed as efficiently as possible during overnight hours to minimize disruption to daily traffic.
