Rough Sleepers Relocate from Cheltenham Square Following Tent Arson

A suspected arson attack in Cheltenham has prompted rough sleepers to move away from Clarence Square. On Thursday evening, March 19, emergency services responded to reports of a tent fire at approximately 8:20 pm.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported. However, it is believed the fire was deliberately set, raising concerns for the vulnerable individuals affected. Comedian and local resident Dom Joly captured the scene in a Facebook video, describing the incident as a “crazy night” and suggesting that the tent belonged to homeless people who had been residing in the square for some time.

Joly condemned the act, stating, “Someone had, I think, poured petrol on the tent and then set them on fire. What kind of person are you when you’re setting fire to homeless people’s tents?”

The council reported that the rough sleepers have now left the area, and the site was cleared promptly on Friday, March 20.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly, sending one fire engine to extinguish the flames. The fire was fully controlled by 9:08 pm.

Gloucestershire Police continues to investigate the incident and is appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, referencing incident number 468 of March 19.
