A suspected arson attack on a tent has led to rough sleepers leaving Clarence Square in Cheltenham. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 8:20 pm on Thursday, March 19, after reports of a fire.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported by the police or fire department. However, authorities believe the fire was deliberately set. Dom Joly, a comedian and local resident, shared a video on Facebook showing flames beneath a large tree, describing the incident as a “crazy night.” He indicated the tent belonged to homeless individuals who had been camping in the square for some time.
Joly expressed outrage, stating, “Someone had, I think, poured petrol on the tent and then set them on fire. What kind of person are you when you’re setting fire to homeless people’s tents?”

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service reported sending one fire engine to extinguish the blaze, which was fully controlled by 9:08 pm. Gloucestershire Police are continuing their investigation and urge anyone with information to come forward, referencing incident number 468 from March 19.
