Rooftop Restaurant Seeks Ground Floor Canopy to Improve Visibility

The Nook, a popular rooftop restaurant in Cheltenham’s town centre, is seeking permission to install a canopy at its main ground floor entrance. Located within The Quadrangle overlooking Imperial Gardens and the Cotswolds, The Nook has gained a reputation for offering a memorable dining experience high above the bustling streets since opening in 2022.

However, many first-time visitors struggle to locate the restaurant’s top-floor setting. To address this, The Nook has submitted an application to Cheltenham Borough Council for a canopy that would provide a clear and inviting ground-level presence, directing customers upwards.

Planning documents explain, “The canopy is required to give the premises more of a presence and signposting since many first-time customers have difficulty finding the restaurant.” The addition would blend seamlessly with the recent refurbishment of The Quadrangle, a previously unloved building transformed into a vibrant mixed-use space.

A letter from SF Planning highlights the context of the surrounding area, noting, “Imperial Square and the Promenade have evolved into active, café-focused public spaces complemented by Regency architecture and modern development.” The Quadrangle refurbishment introduced terraces, external seating, and glazed features that enhance the vitality of Cheltenham’s town centre.

Importantly, the proposed canopy is designed to preserve the architectural integrity of The Quadrangle while adding practical benefits for high foot traffic. The application cites recent approval for similar external structures in the conservation area, such as glazed pergolas at 131 The Promenade, establishing a precedent for sensitive, well-designed additions.

In summary, The Nook’s canopy proposal promises a reversible, high-quality improvement that respects local heritage while boosting the restaurant’s visibility and accessibility. The installation aims to support economic vitality and town centre activation, aligning with relevant planning policies and community interests.
