Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage urged his team to hold their heads high after a narrow 1-0 extra-time loss to Boreham Wood in the National League play-offs on Wednesday. Zak Brunt’s late goal deep into the first half of extra time proved decisive after 105 minutes of intense, goalless football.
“That moment tipped the scales,” Savage admitted, praising the endurance and effort of his players. “I’m incredibly proud of our club and especially the 600 away fans who created an incredible atmosphere, never wavering in their support.”
The match was punctuated by crucial saves from goalkeeper Harry Isted, who denied several clear chances. Isted’s remarkable reflexes kept Forest Green in contention, including multiple one-on-one saves against Boreham Wood’s threats.

However, Forest Green faced additional challenges with key players battling illness and fatigue. Captain Jordan Moore-Taylor was ruled out on match day due to a toe infection—an emotional setback for the squad. Savage acknowledged the physical toll on his side: “Knowlesy and Sean Etaluku were exhausted, Kyle was sick, Mendy played through groin pain, and Jordy was too ill but would have played if he could.”
Despite these hurdles, Forest Green created opportunities but ultimately fell short. Ted Curd’s critical save in the 118th minute denied Jayden Clarke an equalizer, sealing the hosts’ victory.
Savage remains optimistic about the future, emphasizing the foundation building for next season. “We’ve got 16 to 17 players returning, ready to fight again. It’s going to be tougher next year, but we’ll be stronger. We’re learning and growing as a team.”
The defeat marks a tough end to a challenging season filled with obstacles, but the Forest Green boss is focused on progress and improvement. The spirit and resilience shown by his players and fans alike leave him confident about the path ahead.
