Robbie Savage Reflects on Forest Green Rovers' Resilient 4-2 Win Over Tamworth

Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage expressed pride in his squad following their 4-2 victory over Tamworth at The New Lawn, though he emphasized the need for greater clinical finishing. The win marked another step forward as the team currently sits 32 goals into their season target of 100.

The match began on a challenging note when Tamworth’s Jordan Cullinane-Liburd received a red card just five minutes in for a late tackle on Coventry loanee Isaac Moore. Despite being a man down, Tamworth took the lead after a defensive lapse allowed former Cheltenham forward Manny Duku to lob Forest Green’s goalkeeper from distance.

Savage acknowledged the tough start, saying, “My first reaction was that it was a red. I’ve not seen it back, but I thought it was a red.”

Forest Green responded with sustained pressure. Jayden Clarke was fouled inside the box, allowing Kyle McAllister—who was on a scoring run from the previous game—to calmly convert the penalty. Shortly after, a cleverly executed corner routine involving Clarke and McAllister set up Temi Babalola’s tap-in for his first goal with the club.

Babalola’s performance impressed Savage, who praised the 24-year-old forward’s strength, hold-up play, and desire to improve. Babalola doubled his tally on the hour mark, nodding in from a well-placed cross by Jili Buyabu, further cementing his rising influence in the team.

Nick Haughton sealed the win with a confident goal of his own, opting to finish solo rather than passing to Babalola, showcasing his determination after a challenging period adapting to his role. Savage acknowledged Haughton’s qualities and potential, comparing the pressures of his position to those faced by top Premier League talents, highlighting the physical demands at this competitive level.

Forest Green did, however, concede a consolation goal from Tamworth substitute Joseph Rye shortly after the fourth goal. The match also saw concerns for Forest Green as captain Jordan Moore-Taylor had to leave the field with a high ankle sprain, while Laurent Mendy and Abraham Kanu reported minor injuries.

Savage made tactical changes during the game, including swapping center-halves at halftime to maintain defensive stability despite playing against ten men. He remains hopeful about his squad’s fitness and focused on preparing for their next challenge away at Gateshead.

The win underscored Forest Green Rovers’ resilience and attacking prowess but also highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in defensive set-piece organization and finishing efficiency. Savage remains optimistic about the team’s progress as they aim to continue climbing the league table.
