Robbie Savage Proud as Forest Green Rovers Star Delivers Own Baby

Forest Green Rovers defender Jili Buyabu made headlines this week—not for a football assist, but for delivering his own baby boy.

The 22-year-old was thrust into action early Thursday morning when his partner went into labor, and they didn’t have time to reach the hospital. Demonstrating incredible calm and courage, Buyabu successfully delivered their son before paramedics arrived on the scene.

Forest Green Rovers manager Robbie Savage shared the remarkable story on the club’s official website, revealing that Buyabu called him at 6:50 a.m. to announce the birth. Savage recounted the chain of events: “Just before midnight, Jili called to say he needed to take his partner to the hospital—only for it to be a false alarm. But at 6:50 a.m., he delivered the baby himself.”

Savage expressed pride in the young defender’s quick thinking and composure. “He’s full of joy, and both mother and baby are doing well. When the paramedics arrived, he put them on the phone, confirming the delivery. At 22 years old, I couldn’t be prouder.”

Buyabu told BBC Sport, “I’m very proud of myself. You never expect something like that, but it’s an experience you learn so much from.”

Returning to football, Buyabu will bring newfound enthusiasm as Forest Green Rovers, currently fifth in the National League, prepare to face Aldershot at home this Saturday. The squad also welcomes new signing D’Mani Mellor, a 25-year-old forward who joins from Macclesfield after an impressive goal-scoring streak.

Mellor, who came through Manchester United’s academy and gained experience with several clubs including Salford City and Wycombe Wanderers, joins Rovers as they continue their promotion push under manager Savage.

Tonight’s match will see Forest Green Rovers energized both on and off the pitch, inspired by Buyabu’s extraordinary personal triumph.
