Roadworks Mishap Causes Chaos in Bristol

A roadworks mishap in the center of Bristol led to multiple vehicles driving down a closed road and then heading the wrong way down a one-way street to escape the situation.

The incident, which took place on Castle Street in Bristol’s city center, resulted in a brief period of chaos on Sunday afternoon, according to an eyewitness.

The problem arose when a roadworks sign indicating a diversion was incorrectly positioned, leading drivers towards the closed road instead of away from it.

As a result, several drivers mistakenly entered Castle Street, believing it was the diversion route, only to discover that it was closed due to a crane performing a heavy lift for a nearby construction site.

At 3:30 pm, a worker corrected the diversion sign and tried to help the stranded vehicles leave Castle Street, as reported by Bristol Live.

However, this proved challenging as the vehicles had become stuck and were forced to turn around and head back towards the Old Market roundabout.

To exit, the vehicles had to drive the wrong way down the one-way street and wait at the roundabout, typically an entrance for those driving into Broadmead.

The worker who corrected the sign had to step onto the roundabout and stop traffic to allow four vehicles to safely exit.

An eyewitness described the scene, stating: “It caused a bit of brief chaos as all the cars backed up and had to turn around, then exit via the one way street. Probably the funniest thing I have seen,” according to Bristol Live.

It’s believed that the roadworks were only temporary, as One.Network indicates that the road is currently free from any ongoing work.
