Road Safety Review Initiated Following Fatal Crash on A433 near Cirencester

A fatal accident on the A433 Tetbury Road in the Cotswolds has prompted a comprehensive safety review of the area. The tragic incident occurred last weekend when a man in his 60s from Stroud lost his life in a single-vehicle collision while riding his Honda NC750X motorcycle near the Thames Head Inn pub.

Gloucestershire County Council has expressed deep condolences to the motorcyclist’s family and friends and reaffirmed that road safety remains a top priority. Cllr Roger Whyborn, cabinet member for sustainable transport and road safety, stated: “We are deeply saddened by the fatal collision on the A433 near the railway bridge. Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

Acknowledging local concerns about this particularly dangerous section of road, Cllr Whyborn highlighted that in 2023, the council made improvements to signing and road markings at three junctions near Kemble on the A433. The council is now conducting a detailed review of the recent incident and the overall safety record of this stretch.

“This year, we plan to introduce safety schemes on multiple rural roads with the highest incidence of collisions,” Cllr Whyborn added. “Measures will include reduced speed limits and the installation of safety cameras on rural A-roads. Additionally, we are exploring targeted strategies to reduce the disproportionately high number of fatalities among male motorcyclists.”

The call for action follows concerns voiced by the chairman of Kemble and Ewen Parish Council, who stressed the urgency of addressing this hazardous stretch of road. The A433 Tetbury Road has a troubling history of accidents; notably, just 18 months ago in October 2024, motorcyclist Tony Stepp, aged in his 50s from South Cerney, tragically died following a collision involving his Honda motorbike and an Audi A4 on the same road.
