Road Past Westonbirt Arboretum Closed at Night, Forcing 15-Mile Detour

A two-mile section of the A433 Bath Road near Westonbirt Arboretum is closed each weekday night for resurfacing, resulting in a significant 15-mile detour for motorists. The closure affects the stretch through Willesley and Westonbirt and runs from 8pm to 7am daily between Monday, July 6, and Thursday, July 16, excluding the weekend.

Although the closure lies directly outside Westonbirt Arboretum, visitors will not be impacted since the site closes daily at 4:30pm. Westonbirt School is also situated along the closed section, but work schedules have been arranged to avoid disrupting school drop-off and pick-up times.

Drivers needing to travel through this route during closure hours face a long diversion devised by Gloucestershire County Council’s Highways team. The detour reroutes traffic from the northern closure point at the A433 and Bowldown Road junction north to Tetbury. From there, drivers head west on the A4135 through Beverston and Babdown to the A46 junction. The route then leads six miles south towards Dunkirk before looping back north along the A433 through Didmarton to the closure’s southern end at Knockdown. Notably, this diversion crosses the county border into South Gloucestershire.

During the closure, access along the closed road is prohibited except for emergency vehicles and pedestrians accessing properties via designated footways. Motorists who typically use this route overnight are advised to plan alternate journeys accordingly.
