The Coalhouse Inn, a charming 16th-century pub nestled on the banks of the River Severn in Gloucestershire, is set to close its doors this Sunday, 30 August, for the remainder of the year. Located just five miles south of the medieval town of Tewkesbury, the pub enjoys a stunning riverside setting with tranquil gardens overlooking the Malvern Hills, making it a beloved spot for summer visitors.
Due to the tidal nature of the River Severn, the Coalhouse faces seasonal flooding during autumn and winter, rendering access impossible and forcing the establishment to cease operations until the spring. The floodwaters can extend over two miles wide, resulting in road closures and the loss of pub insurance coverage during the winter months.
Owned and run by Kay McDonald, 67, for the past 40 years alongside her partner Steve Taylor, 70, who has been involved for 22 years, the family-run pub is known for its warm hospitality and traditional atmosphere. Their 14-year-old Shetland pony, Dodger, serves as the pub’s endearing mascot.

Steve Taylor reflected on the bustling summer season: “We’ve had a fantastic season this year. Guests have often booked a week in advance, with visitors travelling from Bath and Bristol to enjoy our food and atmosphere. It’s been really encouraging.”
Despite the challenges, the pair remain dedicated to their unique establishment. “During the winter, it’s impossible to reach us due to floods. We have previously funded repairs from our own pockets when flooding has damaged the pub, as insurers won’t cover these events,” explained Steve.
He added, “This is a way of life for us. We truly love this place and the social connection it fosters. We’re a proper traditional pub - no TVs or jukeboxes - just good beers and ciders served at fair prices.”
Typically reopening around Easter and closing at the end of September, the Coalhouse’s season will end slightly earlier this year. Steve said, “We want to be well prepared and come back strong next year. We’ll update visitors on our website when we reopen, weather permitting. Although we’ve enjoyed splendid weather recently, the season must end as the weather turns.”
The pub is celebrated for its fine food and real ales, with pints starting at just £4.50. “You simply can’t get a pint at that price in most places nowadays,” Steve noted.
