River Severn Faces Flood Risk as Heavy Rain Continues in Gloucestershire

Persistent heavy rain across Gloucestershire is causing the River Severn to swell, prompting flood warnings from the Environment Agency. Rising river levels are expected to lead to localized flooding in several communities along the river, particularly from this evening into tomorrow morning.

The Environment Agency has issued alerts for areas including Sandhurst, Maisemore, Coal Wharf, and Riverside, where high tides combined with elevated river flows increase the risk of flooding. Properties on Base Lane in Sandhurst, Sandhurst Lane, and Riverside in Maisemore are specifically identified as vulnerable.

River levels in Gloucester are forecast to peak between 3.5 and 3.65 meters around 9:15 pm tonight, while Sandhurst is expected to see levels reaching approximately 3.7 meters by 9:30 pm. By tomorrow morning, Gloucester’s peak height may range from 3.45 to 3.65 meters, with Sandhurst potentially reaching as high as 3.8 meters.

Alongside flood warnings, flood alerts have been issued for nearby areas—indicating a lower but still notable risk of flooding. The Environment Agency is actively monitoring the situation and advises residents to stay cautious.

A spokesperson urged the public to avoid low-lying footpaths and bridges near the river and cautioned against walking, cycling, or driving through floodwaters to ensure safety.
