Plans are underway to expand and enhance the Lucozade and Ribena factory in the Forest of Dean, as Lucozade Ribena Suntory Ltd seeks approval from district planners for a warehouse extension at the Royal Forest Factory in Coleford.
Established in 1946 by H W Carter to meet increasing demand for Ribena, which was first created in 1938, the factory became part of the Lucozade family in 1957 through acquisitions. Today, the site covers 53 acres and employs over 300 people, producing approximately one billion bottles annually.
The proposed £25 million upgrade includes installing a high-speed production line capable of producing 55,000 bottles per hour by 2027. To support this, a ten-bay warehouse extension spanning 3,078 square meters is planned, featuring a steel portal frame and light grey metal cladding with an eaves height of eight meters and ridge height of 9.5 meters.

Consultants for Suntory emphasize the company’s role as one of the largest employers in the Forest of Dean and highlight ongoing investments exceeding £10 million in infrastructure. The new warehouse will enable the replacement of two outdated production lines, improving operational efficiency and paving the way for future sustainability initiatives.
The expansion has strong support from Coleford Town Council, which recognizes the significant benefits of the development. Gloucestershire Highways have raised no objections, provided the project does not increase traffic or alter access or road safety.
A district council planning officer described Suntory as a “key employer” vital to the local economy, noting the project’s minimal impact on the character of the area and its potential to enhance economic prosperity.
The development management committee is recommended to grant permission, with councillors set to review the proposals at today’s meeting in Coleford.
