Motorists heading to the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) from Friday to Sunday should prepare for significant changes on the roads around RAF Fairford. As crowds flock to the event, new traffic measures linked to the massive Missing Link project on the A417 will impact travel in Gloucestershire.
While local residents may be familiar with ongoing works on the A417, visitors traveling south through the county will face surprises, particularly on Crickley Hill. A new 40mph speed limit has been imposed on the steep section connecting the M5 junction at Brockworth with the Air Balloon roundabout at the hill’s summit. This restriction is part of the large-scale effort to build a dual-carriageway bypass around Birdlip, designed to ease long-standing traffic bottlenecks.
Further along, just beyond Nettleton Bottom, the Cowley roundabout has been replaced with a contraflow system, also enforced by a 40mph limit. Speed cameras are actively monitoring these zones to ensure compliance.

National Highways has issued an important advisory for drivers attending RIAT from July 18 to 20: “If you’re travelling via the A417 this week, be aware of 40mph speed restrictions at Crickley Hill and a new contraflow system at Cowley roundabout. Plan your journey ahead and allow extra travel time.”
Traffic management during the event includes special one-way systems and colour-coded route signs, especially on the A417, A419, and M4, all expected to experience heavy congestion. Organizers recommend using the Swindon Shuttle Bus or Cheltenham Park and Ride services as the most efficient ways to reach the airshow.
Private vehicles should use postcode GL7 4EG for navigation. Upon arrival near the airbase, drivers must follow the colour-coded AA signage strictly for smooth traffic flow.
Notably, taxi services will be limited due to the one-way systems: taxis cannot leave after morning drop-offs or arrive for evening pickups.
Additionally, alternative overflow routes will be in place to help reduce pressure on main roads, easing traffic jams during this busy weekend.
