In the picturesque setting of Gloucestershire, The George in Newnham on Severn has undergone a remarkable transformation. No longer solely a traditional pub, it has evolved into a vital community space designed to combat social isolation. The establishment now offers a diverse range of activities, from talks and art exhibitions to musical events and educational workshops, all with the aim of fostering a sense of togetherness in an area where access to public services and transportation is limited.
The driving force behind this initiative has been Pub is The Hub, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting pubs in expanding their services to better serve their communities. Their Community Services Fund provided a grant for The George, enabling the acquisition of essential equipment such as a projector, screen, and laptop, which have paved the way for free monthly talks spanning various topics.
Visitors to The George now have the opportunity to explore a second-hand shop and an art gallery. Additionally, an inviting café, staffed by volunteer bakers, offers a selection of artisanal teas, coffees, and both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. The real highlight of the café, however, is the delectable homemade cakes, creating a warm and inclusive environment for individuals of all ages to come together.

Nick Assirati, a member of the Newnham on Severn Community Benefit Society, emphasized the pivotal role of the village hub in combating loneliness and fostering social unity. Meanwhile, Roger Belle, a regional advisor for Pub is The Hub, lauded the venue’s success in building meaningful connections within the local community and enriching the social fabric of the small rural village.
This extraordinary transformation has been a result of years of dedicated effort. Following a five-year campaign by the Newnham on Severn Community Benefit Society, the premises were successfully acquired as a community asset in October 2022. With its official reopening in June 2023, The George has since collaborated with local businesses to host events, stimulating footfall in the area.
As the Newnham on Severn Community Benefit Society strives to maintain the hub’s momentum, plans are underway to enlist a part-time paid manager to oversee its operations, ensuring its continued role as a nurturing center for inclusivity, creativity, and companionship.
