In the latest episode of Life in the Dales, Jess, girlfriend of Reuben Owen, shared a deeply moving tribute to her late grandfather, George, who passed away in 2018. The show follows Reuben’s daily life managing the family farm in Swaledale, North Yorkshire, alongside friends and family.
During the episode, which aired on Tuesday, June 2, Reuben and his team were clearing fallen trees from a church graveyard—a task close to their hearts as it benefits the local community. Jess took a moment to visit her grandfather’s resting place nearby, reflecting on her fond memories.
Reuben opened the conversation by acknowledging the significance of the location, saying, “Especially as it’s the local church, your farm is just up there, so quite a few of your family that you were very close to are here, aren’t they?” Jess responded, “Yeah, grandad’s up there,” adding warmly that he was “a character.”

Later, Jess and her grandmother shared a poignant moment honoring George’s enduring influence on their family and farm. Jess recalled how her grandmother has always been a pillar of support, especially after George’s passing. “I miss grandad, I really do miss grandad. It’s not the same anymore since he died,” Jess admitted.
George inherited Brough Castle Farm at just 18 and dedicated his life to growing the family legacy. Jess shared her belief that he would be proud of how the farm has thrived, telling her Nana, “I think he’d be happy to see where it’s at now, things have carried on.” Her grandmother agreed, expressing pride in Jess and Reuben, saying George would have been “thrilled to bits” with their hard work.
The episode also highlighted the strong family bonds and values passed down through generations. Jess fondly remembered how her grandfather always involved her in farm work, encouraging her efforts and making her feel proud of her contributions.
With a smile, Jess joked about a family saying and Reuben’s skills, “I think I’ve got the right one there, haven’t I?” The emotional tribute painted a vivid picture of a family united by love, hard work, and respect for their roots.
Life in the Dales featuring Reuben Owen and Jess airs on Channel 5 every Tuesday at 8pm.
