Reuben Owen Faces Major Setback on ‘Life in the Dales’ Journey

Reuben Owen candidly declared, “that’s the end of my road,” following a significant mechanical setback on his Channel 5 show, Life in the Dales.

Known from the popular Our Yorkshire Farm series alongside his family, Reuben now stars in his own show, documenting his efforts to build a machinery business in Yorkshire.

In the latest episode, originally aired last year, Reuben embarked on a 100-mile journey to Whitby in vintage tractors alongside his girlfriend, Jessica Ellwood, and close friends to celebrate his 21st birthday. The tractors, capable of reaching only about 16mph, aimed to transport the group on a scenic route culminating in a traditional fish and chips celebration on the beach.

However, the adventure quickly hit a snag when Reuben’s tractor began emitting smoke and overheating early in the trip. Stranded roadside, he received help from his friend Tommy. Jessica, trailing behind, noted the smell of something burning and spotted a serious leak. With no antifreeze or water packed, Reuben had to improvise using his own drinking water to cool the engine.

Despite replacing the fanbelt, the difficulties continued as the crew faced Sutton Bank, one of Britain’s toughest hills. Reuben admitted his growing anxiety, saying, “I am not confident here – this is going to take some doing. I am very nervous.” Moments later, his tractor veered off the roadside, engulfed in smoke, prompting Reuben to step down, disheartened that the journey might be over. Thankfully, Tommy arrived with a tow rope to rescue the ailing vehicle.

After a rest and cooling period, Reuben was able to restart the tractor, lifting everyone’s spirits. Still, trouble persisted when an oil leak emerged, necessitating an overnight head gasket replacement.

Despite the mechanical hardships, the group triumphantly arrived in Whitby. Reuben was touched by Jessica’s surprise birthday cake adorned with his photo, sparking laughter over his self-deprecating comment, “What an awful picture!” The birthday celebration capped off an unforgettable adventure.

Reflecting on the journey, Reuben expressed heartfelt thanks: “It’s been brilliant, thank you. We have gone right across Yorkshire, from one side to the other, on our tractors. It has been the adventure of a lifetime really, thinking about it. I couldn’t imagine spending my 21st in a better way.”
