Reuben Owen Faces Major Setback in 'Life in the Dales' Tractor Challenge

Reuben Owen, known from the popular series Our Yorkshire Farm, shared a heartfelt moment of frustration declaring, “that’s the end of my road,” after a serious mechanical failure on his Channel 5 show, Life in the Dales.

The series follows Reuben’s journey as he builds his own machinery business. In the latest episode, which originally aired last year, Reuben embarked on a memorable 100-mile tractor trek through Yorkshire to celebrate his 21st birthday. Joined by his girlfriend Jessica Ellwood and friends, the group planned to reach Whitby—traveling at a modest speed of roughly 16mph—and enjoy birthday fish and chips on the beach.

However, the adventure quickly took a turn when Reuben’s vintage tractor began smoking and overheating early in the trip. Stranded roadside, he was forced to call on his friend Tommy for assistance. Jessica warned of a strong burning smell and spotted fluid leaking from the vehicle. Without having packed essential supplies, Reuben had to improvise, using his own drinking water to cool the engine. He also replaced the fanbelt to keep the tractor running.

Their biggest challenge came later at Sutton Bank, one of North Yorkshire’s steepest hills. Nervous about the climb, Reuben admitted, “I am very nervous.” The tractor then veered off the road, emitting thick smoke. Feeling defeated, Reuben confessed, “I think that’s the end of my road.” Fortunately, Tommy arrived with a tow rope and pulled the tractor to safety. After letting the engine cool, Reuben managed to get it started again, lifting the group’s spirits.

Their troubles weren’t over yet. An oil leak forced an overnight head gasket replacement, yet undeterred, the group pressed forward and eventually reached Whitby. There, Jessica surprised Reuben with a birthday cake decorated with his photo, sparking laughter and joy despite the earlier challenges. Reflecting on the journey, Reuben said, “It’s been brilliant. We’ve gone right across Yorkshire on our tractors. This has been the adventure of a lifetime. I couldn’t imagine spending my 21st in a better way.”
