Residents of Cotswolds Village Frustrated by Celebrity Pub Traffic Chaos

Residents of Clanfield, a quaint village in the Cotswolds, are growing increasingly frustrated as celebrity-frequented pubs cause significant traffic and parking chaos. The Double Red Duke boutique hotel and restaurant, along with the neighboring Mason’s Arms, have become hotspots for stars such as Kate Moss and Jeremy Clarkson, bringing an influx of visitors that many locals find overwhelming.

Since being taken over in 2021, these twin gastro pubs have attracted a surge of patrons, including Premiership footballers and influencers. While their popularity boosts local business, the downside is clear: visitors park indiscriminately, often blocking driveways and lining the roads, much to residents’ dismay. Some homeowners have resorted to placing cones and bollards outside their properties to deter illegal parking.

One long-time resident lamented, “Pub goers turn in my driveway – if you say anything, you get a mouthful of abuse.” Others expressed fears that the persistent parking problems might negatively impact property values. Ann Roberts, who has lived in Clanfield for 13 years, described the situation as “diabolical,” with neighbors frequently placing bollards to protect their driveways from inconsiderate parkers.

The influx of vehicles stretches beyond weekends. Victoria, a recent arrival to the village, highlighted the dangers posed by visitors parking near critical areas such as the war memorial and how blocked access could hinder emergency vehicles like fire engines. Another resident echoed the sentiment, emphasizing how the “wall to wall cars” have made everyday life challenging and caused some families to reconsider staying in their beloved village.

Clanfield Parish Council has raised concerns with Oxfordshire County Council, which has sent enforcement officers to address complaints. However, instances of dangerous and disrespectful parking continue, with local council chair Giles Horton acknowledging the pubs’ efforts to encourage responsible parking but recognizing the challenges posed by visitor behavior.

The Masons Arms, praised by food critics for its blend of traditional and modern charm, and The Double Red Duke, known as one of the country’s hippest new hotels, undeniably contribute to Clanfield’s appeal. But as one resident put it, “We want to support local businesses, but the parking chaos is changing the atmosphere of the village.”

As the pubs continue to draw crowds, balancing tourism and residents’ everyday lives remains a pressing concern in this picturesque corner of Oxfordshire.
