Marcelino Abad Tolentino, known as ‘Mashico,’ is not only the oldest living man in Peru, but possibly the world. Celebrating his 125th birthday in 2025, he resides in a care home in Huánuco, surrounded by the very flora and fauna that have been part of his life for over a century.
Born in a small village in 1900, Mashico has witnessed significant historical changes, but his greatest achievement remains his health and wellbeing, attributed to his natural diet and indomitable spirit.
Crafting a diet from the foods grown in his “Eden forest,” consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, and lamb meat, has been key to supporting his longevity. Additionally, his adherence to the traditional Andean practice of chewing coca leaves, combined with a daily intake of avocado, is considered vital to his remarkable health.

According to a study, the practice of chewing coca leaves has been used for centuries by Andean Indians to enhance physical performance, with demonstrated benefits during exercise. Marcelino’s promoter, Misael Ayra, emphasized that the consumption of natural products kept him vigorous, with fruits from his garden serving as a vital source of vitality.
Complementing his diet with herbs and medicinal plants collected from nature, Marcelino’s cook at the care home revealed his essential daily breakfast item - avocado. This superfood is credited for its positive impact on his longevity, with Marcelino insisting on having it every morning.
Despite his age and the challenges he has faced, Marcelino’s health remains stable, embodied by his daily strolls in a wheelchair. His resilience and adaptability to various life situations, including the early loss of his parents, have shaped his extraordinary journey.
