Reform UK Councillor Defends Vote Against Flying Pride Flag in Village

Graham Bocking, the sole Reform UK councillor on Tewkesbury Borough Council, has publicly clarified his reasons for voting against flying the Pride flag in Churchdown last year. The issue has sparked controversy following remarks made by a Liberal Democrat council leader, who accused Reform UK members of harboring homophobic views.

In a recent social media video, the Lib Dem leader defended the council’s decision to fly the Pride flag during June to honor the LGBT+ community. However, he also suggested that some Reform UK councillors might hold prejudiced views, linking them to homophobia. Reform UK condemned these remarks as unfair generalizations aimed specifically at Councillor Bocking, given his unique representation on the council.

Responding to the allegations, Cllr Bocking expressed his deep disappointment with the political attack and categorically denied ever holding homophobic beliefs. He emphasized his commitment to inclusivity and urged residents to judge him by his actions and service.

Regarding the flag vote in May, Cllr Bocking explained his decision to propose flying the Union Flag throughout June instead of the Pride flag. He argued that the Union Flag serves as a neutral and inclusive emblem representing all residents regardless of religion, creed, or sexual orientation. The majority of the parish council agreed with this approach, viewing it as a way to honor diversity while maintaining institutional neutrality.

Cllr Bocking highlighted that 40% of those supporting his amendment were Liberal Democrats, indicating cross-party agreement on this position. He also noted the practical challenges of flying multiple flags for various cultural and religious events throughout the year. By selecting the Union Flag as the sole flag to be flown, the council aims to respect all community members and events equally.
