Reform UK Councillor Apologises for Controversial ‘Racist’ Comments

Reform UK councillor Mark Howard has issued a formal apology following a controversy sparked by comments he made at a Gloucestershire County Council meeting last September. During a debate concerning the enforcement of planning laws on hotels housing asylum seekers, Howard made remarks that were widely criticized as racist.

His comments prompted immediate and vocal objections from fellow councillors. Councillor Sajid Patel, representing Barton and Tredworth for the Conservative Party, condemned the speech, stating he had “never heard so much ridiculous bloody racism.”

In response to the backlash, Councillor Howard acknowledged that his words “caused a great deal of consternation and inadvertently, offence.” He has since apologized publicly and met with Councillor Patel personally to express the sincerity of his remorse.

Howard explained in his written apology that, while discussing a highly emotive issue, he referenced a message from a former colleague and made a comment about Muslim women walking behind their husbands. He admitted these remarks were “overly robust” and relied on unhelpful stereotypes that had the potential to convey unintended hostility.

He stated, “Although this was not meant to cause offence, it clearly did. I regret any offence caused and will reflect on my approach to such sensitive topics going forward.”

Howard also highlighted the passionate nature of political debate, acknowledging that emotions can run high, especially when addressing divisive issues. Following his face-to-face apology to Councillor Patel, the two have agreed to meet privately to foster better understanding between them.

Conservative group leader Stephen Davies, who filed the original standards complaint, welcomed the resolution, saying, “I am pleased that this issue has been eventually resolved and that Cllr Howard acknowledges that his comments were out of order.”

Howard expressed hope that this episode will allow him to continue his service to the people of Gloucestershire with renewed focus and respect.
