The hospitality industry faces undeniable challenges—with rising costs and shrinking disposable incomes creating a tough landscape for restaurants. Yet some places manage to find their stride, carving out a niche that keeps customers returning. Cote in Cirencester is one such success story.
Located on Black Jack Street, arguably the prettiest street in Cirencester, Cote benefits from a vibrant atmosphere filled with locals and visitors exploring the independent shops. It’s also a prime spot for people watching—on a recent visit, we even spotted a familiar face strolling by, possibly Nick Knowles.
When Cote first opened here a decade ago, many questioned whether a chain restaurant could thrive in this market. But from day one, it’s been a hit. I’ve visited multiple times—weeknights, early evenings, weekends—and it’s consistently busy for a reason.

Our recent trip, with family in tow, coincided with Cote’s big menu refresh and the return of its popular prix-fixe deal—two courses for £19.95 or three for £23.95. Highlights included the return of my favorite starter, whitebait, plus tempting new options like a steak hache burger and a French twist on fish and chips. The expanded breakfast menu also offers granola, pastries, and baguettes for early risers.
Seeking respite from the heat, we opted to dine inside and were impressed by the diverse menu. From starters to “Cote Icons” like steak frites and beef bourguignon, to the “Cote Butchery” steaks and lighter fare such as salads, there’s something for every palate. Fish dishes, including moules mariniere, salmon bearnaise, and plaice frites, provide great choices for those wanting something lighter.
I chose moules mariniere with frites — a dish I rarely cook at home but thoroughly enjoy. My son went classic with steak frites, praising its rich and sharp garlic and steak flavors. My daughter opted for risotto verts, a vibrant dish featuring peas, courgettes, and French beans, while my wife selected the salmon bearnaise, which came with sautéed tarragon new potatoes and tenderstem broccoli—and earned her enthusiastic approval.
For dessert, the decision was a no-brainer. We shared elderflower crème brûlée lightened with strawberry and basil, a cherry and chocolate crepe, and a Café Gourmand. The latter was a revelation for my daughter, who discovered just how exquisite canelés are—accompanied by a raspberry macaron and a warm madeleine.
By the end of our meal, the four of us—with drinks and tip—spent £130. In today’s dining market, where chain restaurants often push past £100 for four, this felt like solid value.
In a crowded high street restaurant scene, having a dependable, well-run spot that delivers both good food and service is priceless. For us, Cote on Black Jack Street remains just that.
