Rediscovering Cirencester’s Charm: A £24 Meal Deal on a Picturesque Cotswold Street

The hospitality industry is facing challenging times with rising costs and shrinking disposable incomes. Amidst this perfect storm, standing out in a competitive market is no simple task. Yet, Cote in Cirencester seems to have found the winning formula—offering reliability, great value, and excellent service.

Nestled on Black Jack Street, arguably Cirencester’s most picturesque road, Cote attracts both locals and visitors who come to explore the independent shops or simply enjoy the lively atmosphere. The street is also perfect for people watching—on this visit, spotting a familiar face like Nick Knowles only added to the charm.

When Cote first opened its Cirencester branch ten years ago, there was some skepticism about how a chain restaurant would fit in. However, it quickly became a popular spot. Whether it’s a weeknight, early evening, or busy weekend, the place is buzzing, proving they’re clearly doing something right.

During our recent visit, I brought my wife and two children to sample Cote’s refreshed menu, which recently reintroduced its prix-fixe offer: two courses for £19.95 or three for £23.95. While my favorite starter, whitebait, made a comeback, I opted for simpler fare this time.

The new menu additions include a steak haché burger, a French take on fish and chips, and an expanded breakfast selection featuring granola, pastries, and baguettes. As the temperature soared outside, we settled inside for some cool respite and took our time choosing from starters, ‘Cote Icons’ (like steak frites and beef bourguignon), ‘Cote Butchery’ steaks, and lighter options like salads and baguettes. Fish lovers can enjoy dishes like salmon bearnaise, plaice frites, or a hearty fish stew.

I ordered moules marinière with frites—a dish I rarely make at home but always enjoy. My son went for the classic steak frites, praising its perfect harmony of rich garlic and tender steak. My daughter chose risotto verts, a vibrant blend of peas, courgettes, and French beans, while my wife enjoyed the salmon with sauteed tarragon potatoes and tenderstem broccoli.

The moules were succulent and tender, bathed in a delightful white wine sauce ideal for dipping crispy fries. The risotto impressed with its fresh herb flavors, and the salmon dish received enthusiastic approval.

For dessert, we indulged in elderflower crème brûlée garnished with strawberry and basil, a cherry and chocolate crepe, and a ‘Café Gourmand.’ The latter was a revelation for my daughter, who discovered the deliciousness of canelés alongside raspberry macarons and warm madeleines.

We left full and satisfied. Our bill for four, each with a drink and a tip, came to £130—a reasonable price in today’s dining landscape where meals for four often exceed £100 at chains.

In a busy high street crowded with choices, it’s comforting to have a dependable restaurant like Cote that consistently gets it right—offering a taste of France in the heart of the Cotswolds.
