Rediscovering a Charming Cotswold Street with a £24 Meal Deal at Cote

The hospitality industry is facing tough times, with rising costs and shrinking disposable incomes creating a challenging environment for restaurants. Standing out in such a competitive market is no easy feat. Yet, Cote in Cirencester appears to be hitting the right notes by offering a winning combination of reliability, good value—especially with their prix-fixe menu—and excellent service.

Located on Black Jack Street, arguably Cirencester’s prettiest thoroughfare, Cote attracts both locals and visitors alike. This charming street buzzes daily with people exploring independent shops and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. It’s even a prime spot for people watching—on our visit, we almost spotted Nick Knowles strolling by.

When Cote announced plans to open here ten years ago, there was some skepticism. Cirencester had never had a chain restaurant like this before, but Cote quickly proved itself. Whether on weeknights or weekends, it’s consistently busy, a testament to its enduring appeal.

During a recent warm evening, my family and I visited to try out Cote’s updated menu and the return of their popular prix-fixe deal—two courses for £19.95 and three for £23.95. The classic whitebait, one of my favorites, is back, though I decided to save the three-course experience for another time.

The new dishes caught my eye, including a steak haché burger, a French-inspired fish and chips, and an expanded breakfast menu featuring granola, pastries, and breakfast baguettes for early risers.

We dined inside, seeking refuge from the heat, and explored the menu’s diverse offerings. Starters, ‘Cote Icons’ like steak frites and beef bourguignon, ‘Cote Butchery’ steaks, and lighter options such as salads and baguettes all featured prominently. Fish lovers have plenty of choices too, from salmon bearnaise to a hearty fish stew.

I chose the moules marinières with frites—something I rarely make at home but love to eat. My son opted for the classic steak frites, describing it as a “delicious blend of rich and sharp flavors.” My daughter enjoyed the risotto verts, full of peas, courgettes, and French beans, while my wife savored the salmon bearnaise accompanied by sautéed tarragon new potatoes and tenderstem broccoli.

The moules were perfectly fresh and juicy, swimming in a flavorful white wine sauce ideal for dipping the crispy frites. The bright green risotto was light yet packed with fresh herbs, winning compliments all around. The salmon dish received enthusiastic approval from my wife.

Desserts were the perfect finish. We shared two elderflower crème brûlées garnished with strawberry and basil, a cherry and chocolate crêpe, and a ‘Café Gourmand’. My daughter made a delightful discovery with the canelés, which were accompanied by a raspberry macaron and a warm madeleine.

Full and happy, we left satisfied. Our total, including one drink each and a tip, was £130—good value in today’s dining scene, where a chain restaurant meal for four can easily push past £100.

In a bustling high street filled with choices, having a dependable spot that consistently gets it right is truly invaluable—especially when it serves moules like these.
