Reckless Driving Claims Two Lives in Cotswolds Crash Weeks After License Acquisition

A tragic car crash near Aldsworth in Gloucestershire has resulted in a 21-year-old woman receiving a six-year prison sentence for causing the deaths of two people only weeks after obtaining her driving license.

Liberty Mitchell, from Chipping Norton, was traveling at 96mph in a 60mph zone on December 2, 2022, when she collided with a taxi carrying driver Octavian Codreanu and passenger Moyra Whelan. Both victims died at the scene, while three others sustained serious injuries.

The crash occurred on the B4425 road and involved four vehicles: a grey Mini Cooper driven by Mitchell, a black Audi A3, a grey Polestar 2, and a black Seat Leon. Mitchell admitted to attempting to overtake three cars simultaneously before aborting the maneuver and striking the taxi.

At Gloucester Crown Court, Mitchell pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving causing death, serious injury, and driving uninsured, as her insurance did not cover work-related use, despite her self-employed status as a cleaner.

Judge Rupert Lowe sentenced Mitchell to six years and eight months in prison, noting her reckless behavior and youthful arrogance despite having held her driving license for less than three weeks. The judge emphasized the irreversible impact on the victims' families and urged acknowledgment of the devastating consequences of such reckless actions.

Family and friends of the victims expressed profound grief. Nicola Cooper, a passenger in the taxi, described enduring survivor’s guilt and ongoing trauma. Moyra Whelan’s sister, Katy-Louise Whelan, lamented the loss of a bright, promising life cut short violently.

Mitchell’s defense counsel argued that her inexperience contributed to her misjudgment, rather than willful irresponsibility. Nevertheless, the court held Mitchell accountable for her dangerous decisions.

Sergeant Williams from the Serious Collision Investigation Team expressed relief that Mitchell pleaded guilty and highlighted the lasting impact of the crash on victims, families, and witnesses alike.

This case serves as a solemn reminder of the grave consequences reckless driving can have, especially for new drivers still learning the responsibilities that come with the road.
