Middlesex’s bid for victory over Gloucestershire in the final day of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two encounter at the Seat Unique Stadium was thwarted by persistent Bristol rain.
Gloucestershire, set a challenging target of 362 runs, found themselves precariously placed at 145 for 9, on the verge of their tenth defeat in 13 red-ball matches. Seamers Toby Roland-Jones and Ryan Higgins impressed with bowling figures of 4 for 30 and 3 for 35 respectively, relentlessly applying pressure. However, a determined last-wicket partnership between Matt Taylor, unbeaten on 16, and JT Langridge, 1 not out, managed to withstand Middlesex’s advances for seven overs. Umpires Hassan Adnan and Ben Pevarall eventually called off play at 4.10pm with 41 overs still left, as rain showers made further play impossible.
Earlier in the day, Middlesex posted a commanding 361 in their second innings, thanks largely to an enterprising 94 from Harry Duke off 116 balls. Langridge took three of the final four wickets to conclude with 5 for 87, marking his second five-wicket haul in two matches for Gloucestershire.

With Middlesex preparing for their upcoming Metro Bank One Day Cup final against Leicestershire, they earned 13 points from this drawn game, while Gloucestershire collected a fortunate 12 points, marking their first draw of the season.
Middlesex resumed their innings on 298 for 6, holding a 328-run lead. Duke, who had raised a cautious half-century the previous evening, looked to accelerate the scoring, hitting Langridge’s delivery over long-off for six. Langridge soon struck back, convincing Zafar Gohar to edge a short-pitched ball behind. Undeterred, Duke continued, smashing Taylor for another six and raising the tempo.
The innings lost momentum thereafter, with Sebastian Morgan dismissed pulling to deep midwicket, and Roland-Jones bowled by Langridge shortly after. The lower order collapsed swiftly as Langridge captured his second five-wicket haul, reducing Middlesex to 361 all out.
Gloucestershire’s response began ominously as Middlesex’s new-ball attack quickly took three wickets, with Higgins and Roland-Jones removing Ollie Price, Joe Phillips, and Miles Hammond cheaply, leaving Gloucestershire at 18 for 3.
James Bracey reached his thousandth first-class run of the season with a neat drive but soon fell, followed by Tommy Boorman and Bracey again, all victims to tight bowling. Gloucestershire were left reeling at 36 for 5.
Degree of resistance came from Kamran Dhariwal and Daz Ahmed, who shared a sixth-wicket stand of 41 before Dhariwal was dismissed. Gloucestershire limped to lunch at 77 for 6.
After lunch, Ahmed and Ed Middleton took the score to 111 for 6 before rain disrupted play, resulting in an hour and 20 minutes lost and 16 overs not bowled. During this interruption, tea was taken.
On resumption, Higgins struck again as Middleton edged behind to Harry Duke, and Roland-Jones had Ahmed caught at extra cover. Gloucestershire continued to falter, with spin bowler Zafar Gohar claiming the wicket of R Sai Kishore before worsening weather forced the umpires to end the game at 5.24pm.
The persistent rainfall ensured the match ended in a draw, denying Middlesex a deserved victory and offering Gloucestershire a reprieve from a run of defeats in the red-ball format this season.
