A suspected terror plot targeting RAF Fairford, an airbase used by the US Air Force in Gloucestershire, was reportedly aiming to cause significant damage, US President Donald Trump has stated.
Early on Sunday, armed police arrested five men suspected of explosives and terrorism offences after stopping three vans near the village of Whelford. Counter-terrorism officers are investigating possible links between the plot and Iran.
The police operation was not intelligence-led, indicating that authorities did not have prior knowledge of the potential threat. Nevertheless, President Trump commended the UK police response and indicated that the suspects had been under surveillance for some time.

“It was fantastic. Working with Britain, it was an amazing job,” Mr Trump said. “We had them under investigation. They were looking to do big damage to our fort, and working with the British worked out great.”
At about 12.45am on Sunday, three suspicious vehicles travelling towards RAF Fairford were reported by residents. Armed officers subsequently arrested the men in the Whelford area on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and preparation of a terrorist act.
A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, reported noticing three vans blocking the road and a large group of hooded individuals wearing balaclavas. The resident, who was driving home at the time, called emergency services due to the suspicious activity. She noted that RAF Fairford had been on high alert due to a terror threat.
The resident said police arrived approximately 15 minutes after the call, and her intervention may have disrupted the plot.
Aerial footage showed a bomb disposal robot inspecting the three white vans, two of which had open rear doors. Large black barrels were scattered nearby. A 400-metre cordon was established, leading to the evacuation of 85 households. Local councils have arranged overnight accommodation for those displaced.
The Army’s ordnance disposal unit remains on site examining the vehicles. Temporary Chief Constable Maggie Blyth of Bedfordshire Constabulary stated the situation is believed to be contained.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the incident as “deeply concerning,” assuring that the Government will take all necessary measures to protect the public. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting refrained from commenting on the ongoing operation but confirmed coordination with US counterparts.
Regarding potential Iranian involvement, Mr Streeting said it was too early to speculate and declined further comment to avoid jeopardising the investigation.
In March 2026, the UK authorised the use of RAF bases for “defensive” US actions against Iranian missile sites, highlighting RAF Fairford’s strategic importance. Following this, the US increased its operational presence at the base.
Local residents have reported heightened security measures around RAF Fairford in recent weeks, including the placement of heavy vehicles and concrete barriers at base gates to enhance protection.
Counter Terrorism Policing’s Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans confirmed that five men remain in custody as the investigation progresses. Authorities continue to work with Gloucestershire Police to ensure community safety.
Suspects arrested under the Terrorism Act can be held for up to 14 days without charge. The arrests come amid rising concerns about threats from hostile states such as Iran and Russia, which have been linked to proxy activities on UK soil.
RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk has been placed on Charlie alert, the second-highest threat level set by the US Department of Defence. RAF Fairford is reportedly at Delta alert, the highest level.
The US Air Force personnel stationed at RAF Fairford “remain vigilant,” according to a spokesperson, who declined to discuss specific security measures due to operational reasons. The 501st Combat Support Wing, which operates at RAF Fairford among other bases, will continue taking appropriate actions to ensure the safety of US service members and civilians.
