Nearly 30 individuals were accommodated in hotels last night after a major incident was declared at RAF Fairford on Sunday, 27 September.
Five men, all UK nationals from London aged between 23 and 25, remain in police custody on Monday, 28 September. They are suspected of explosives and terrorism offences in connection with the incident.
A significant police and military presence continues around the area following the arrests, which were made after three vans described as “suspicious” were seen travelling towards RAF Fairford. A 400-metre cordon remains in place but is expected to be reviewed later today, according to Counter Terrorism Police.

The initial report was received by Gloucestershire Police at approximately 12:45 am on Sunday when the three vehicles were spotted approaching the airbase. Subsequently, 85 properties were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
At the peak of the incident, Cotswold District Council provided support to around 60 people at a rest centre located at Cirencester Leisure Centre. Additionally, hotel accommodation was arranged for 28 individuals who had no alternative places to stay following the establishment of the cordon.
Mike Evemy, leader of Cotswold District Council, confirmed that the rest centre would be relocated to the council offices in Cirencester and that no timeline for residents’ return home has yet been confirmed. He expressed sympathy for those affected, acknowledging the uncertainty of the situation.
Cllr Evemy stated:
“Supporting residents affected by the incident in Whelford remains our immediate priority. We evacuated 85 households, and at the height of the incident, around 60 people were supported at the rest centre at Cirencester Leisure Centre.
“We are now moving the rest centre to the council offices, where our teams will continue to provide food, drink, information, and support. We arranged hotel accommodation for 28 people who needed it.
“Since the evacuation, our teams have worked to ensure that everyone affected has safe accommodation and the practical support they require. At the rest centre, food, drink, and additional assistance have been provided to vulnerable individuals.
“We have also facilitated access to essential medication and coordinated closely with police to assure the welfare of pets left in evacuated homes.
“So far, there is no confirmed date for when residents can return home. As a precaution, we are extending hotel accommodation options so that all who need it have a place to stay until further notice.
“All evacuated residents are being informed about the rest centre’s relocation and other updates.
“We understand that this is a distressing and uncertain time for residents, and we will continue to provide updates as information becomes available. We urge everyone to follow official guidance.
“I want to thank residents for their patience and cooperation during this challenging period. I also want to acknowledge the dedication of the police, multi-agency partners, council teams, and others involved in our community’s response.
“Our focus remains on caring for our residents and ensuring they receive the support they need for as long as this situation persists.”
