RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire to Support US Operations Amid Iran Tensions

The United Kingdom has agreed to allow the United States to use RAF bases, including potentially RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, to conduct defensive operations against Iranian missile threats in the Middle East. This decision comes after a suspected drone strike at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and escalating regional tensions.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer confirmed that the UK had granted the US request to utilize British military facilities for the “specific and limited defensive purpose” of targeting Iranian missile storage depots and launchers, aiming to prevent attacks on UK nationals and allies. Sir Keir emphasized that British forces would not take direct part in offensive actions but would support efforts to mitigate the threat posed by Iran’s aggressive actions.

The decision followed consultations with regional leaders who sought the UK’s increased support against Iranian missile strikes, which have threatened countries in the Gulf area. The Prime Minister underscored that the move is in line with international law, noting the government’s position that it is acting in “collective self-defence.”

Meanwhile, RAF Akrotiri, a key UK base in Cyprus, experienced a suspected drone attack in the early hours of Monday. The Ministry of Defence reported no casualties and limited damage, with a precautionary temporary dispersal of non-essential personnel underway. Local authorities and UK officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure security.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to intensify, with the US and Israel carrying out strikes targeting Iranian-backed forces following heightened hostilities after the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader. Israeli military actions also extended to Lebanon amid cross-border missile exchanges.

More than 200,000 British nationals, including military personnel, are currently at risk within the Gulf region, prompting the Foreign Office to initiate a major support and contingency operation. British citizens have been urged to register their presence in affected countries such as Bahrain, Israel, Palestine, Qatar, and the UAE. The government is also preparing evacuation plans should airspace restrictions persist.

The decision to permit US use of British bases has sparked political debate. The Green Party’s Zack Polanski criticized the move as involvement in another unauthorized Middle East conflict, while Liberal Democrats called for parliamentary approval on such decisions. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described the Prime Minister as lacking leadership but welcomed the cooperation with the US.

As the situation evolves, UK authorities continue to prioritize the safety of their nationals and allies through coordinated diplomatic and military measures in the region.
