Radiologist Recommends Three Essential Daily Exercises for Home Workers

Working from home often means spending long hours seated at a desk, which can negatively impact your health—especially your leg circulation. Dr. Mark Regi, Consultant Interventional Radiologist at VeinCentre, emphasizes the importance of incorporating three specific exercises into your daily routine to counteract these effects.

“Modern lifestyles mean many of us sit for eight hours or more each day,” explains Dr. Regi. “Regular movement is crucial to maintaining healthy circulation and preventing problems like varicose veins and leg ulcers. These three exercises are easy to do anywhere—even during your workday—and can greatly improve blood flow and mobility.”

  1. Ankle Stretch
Sitting upright, hold the side of your chair for balance if needed. Extend one leg straight out and gently point your toes away from you, then pull them back toward your body. Repeat 10 times for each leg. This stretch promotes lower leg circulation while increasing ankle flexibility.

  1. Ankle Roll
While seated, lift one foot slightly off the floor. Rotate your ankle 10 times clockwise, then 10 times counterclockwise. Lower the foot back down and repeat on the other side. These rolls can be discreetly performed during work without interruption.

  2. Calf Raise
With your feet hip-width apart, sit upright and slowly lift your heels off the ground, rising onto the balls of your feet. Hold for a couple of seconds, then lower your heels back down. Perform 10 repetitions on each leg. This exercise activates calf muscles, helping to pump blood and reduce pooling that leads to vascular issues.

Dr. Regi also advises taking regular breaks—standing or walking every 30 minutes if possible. Simple changes like standing during phone calls or video meetings and taking a brisk walk after lunch help maintain circulation and overall health. Remember to stay hydrated, as drinking plenty of water encourages frequent movement throughout your day.

Incorporating these exercises and habits into your work-from-home routine can protect your vascular health, reduce discomfort, and enhance your long-term wellness.
